|Balloan Cottage is ideally suited for exploring the northern highlands - there is the beautiful Dornoch Beach and the Royal Dornoch Golf Course nearby.
The Royal Burgh of Dornoch
The historic cathedral town of Dornoch has restaurants, cafes, shops and a museum. Throughout the summer there is a vibrant calendar of events such as the Sutherland County Show, the Dornoch Highland Games, Dornoch Festival Week and the popular Carnegie Shield golf tournament. Attractions close by include Dunrobin Castle, home of the Dukes of Sutherland, and the Falls of Shin, where wild salmon leap up the falls.
The Northern Highlands
Further afield, a scenic drive for about an hour and a half will take you to the west coast, to Ullapool, Lochinver or further north to Kylesku. Hillwalking is available in many locations and for serious Munro-baggers, we are close enough to Ben Loyal, Ben Hope, Ben Klibreck and Ben Wyvis for a long day’s climbing. Whisky distilleries are dotted to the south (Glenmorangie, Dalmore, Balblair) and north (Clyneleish) and most offer tours and tastings. The Royal Dornoch has two courses, but other local towns such as Golspie, Brora, Tain and Bonar Bridge also have courses, each with its own style.
